The American Gaming Association is asking President Donald Trump to intervene on its behalf to help it gain financial assistance during the coronavirus pandemic.
In a letter sent Thursday to Trump, Bill Miller, the group's CEO, asked Trump to make the gaming industry eligible for federal funds through the Paycheck Protection Program. The program was approved as part of the CARES Act stimulus package last month and is designed to give small businesses an economic lifeline druing the coronavirus pandemic.
Miller said the lending rules released by the Small Business Administration "rely on antiquated, discriminatory policy that renders small gaming entities ineligible to receive critical loan assistance designed to help small businesses pay their employees."
And, he said, his association's members and their employees need the help.
"The gaming industry is among the sectors most severely impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak, in large part, due to mandated closure of facilities, which has jeopardized the livelihood of the 1.8 million Americans whose jobs we support across 43 states," he wrote.
"Making SBA resources available to size-eligible gaming businesses is the right thing to do. As it stands, the policy discriminates against these mainstream businesses and, more importantly, the hundreds of thousands of employees who rely on gaming for their livelihood."
