The first nation to master the technology will dominate on the battlefield, the president has predicted
Russia must lead the way in implementing artificial intelligence within its military to harness its potential, President Vladimir Putin has said.
He emphasized that domestically developed software should be integrated into automated military command and control systems. Discussing AI has become "a fad" because "everyone recognizes the colossal opportunities it presents," he remarked during a government meeting on Wednesday focused on the defense industry.
"Whoever is first to refine these technologies for warfare will gain a significant advantage on the battlefield. We must not lose track of this," he warned.
Putin noted that the conflict in Ukraine has accelerated shifts in warfare tactics and that other nations were acknowledging the value of Russia's accumulated experience.
Putin has previously characterized AI as a key to national sovereignty and success in the 21st century, reiterating Russia's intent to be at the forefront of the field.

Last week, Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadaev suggested that AI could potentially replace up to half of all Russian public servants in the future, "possibly even more." However, he expects professions such as doctors and teachers to be less impacted by the transition.
The Russian government is exploring ways to optimize the public sector, aiming for a smaller labor force that can deliver essential services while receiving higher wages.
